St. Mark's Medical Center Welcomes Emergency Medical Director Dr. Roger Willis

Release Date: April 12, 2022

La Grange, TX - St. Mark's Medical Center (SMMC) is pleased to introduce Dr. Roger Willis, MD, as Emergency Department Medical Director.

Dr. Willis is a board certified Family Medicine physician with more than 30 years of emergency medical experience. As part of the Southwest Medical Associates' team that is managing SMMC's emergency room, Dr. Willis began his new role on April 1.

"We are eager for Dr. Willis to fully transition to his new role," said Mark Kimball, President and CEO of St. Mark's Medical Center. "It's terrific that he's previously been an emergency medicine physician with us -- he's familiar with the hospital and community, and he and the team are familiar with each other. Additionally, his knowledge of Southwest Medical's ER model and his extensive career add to the strength of our overall program," Kimball continued.

Since 2000, Dr. Willis has practiced emergency medicine in southeastern Texas hospitals -- at SMMC, as well as other facilities in the Columbus and San Antonio areas. Dr. Willis also is a faculty member for nurse practitioner and physician assistant programs in Texas. Prior to moving to Texas, his posts included both physician and medical director roles for facilities and ambulance services in Rhode Island, Alabama and Georgia.

"I enjoy helping the critical, complicated, unstable patient," said Dr. Willis. "It is extremely rewarding to make a difference in someone's life when they are in a vulnerable state."

Raised and educated in Georgia, Dr. Willis graduated with his Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, and completed his residency at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. He earned his Bachelor of Science at the University of Georgia, majoring in chemistry and minoring in mathematics.

Dr. Willis' mother was a caring nurse who inspired his interest in medicine. "She was my hero, so it seemed like a logical career path for me to follow," he said. Having grown up in a small town, the La Grange area is a welcome change after living 20 years in the San Antonio area.

"This role at St. Mark's seemed like a perfect opportunity for me and Joan, my wife. We are looking forward to building a home that our seven children and their families will enjoy visiting."

Dr. Willis balances the hectic pace of emergency medicine with family time, a wide variety of outdoor activities, and working around their property gardening, building, and completing home projects that he and Joan have envisioned.

SMMC's emergency department is open 24/7 and both the hospital and the ER doctors are 100% in-network with all payors.
