St. Mark's Medical Center is proud to achieve the highly desirable four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). St. Mark's is one of only 1,155 hospitals out of about 4,500 participating Medicare certified hospitals nationwide to earn this rank under the CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating program for 2018. Rankings range from one to five stars with five being the highest. A three-star rating is the most commonly achieved.

The Hospital Compare Overall Star Rating summarizes as many as 57 quality measures across seven different areas including mortality, safety of care and readmission rates using the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. The quality measures reflect a hospital's performance on common conditions that hospitals treat including heart attack, pneumonia and stroke. St. Mark's performed above the national average in four of the seven categories: readmission, safety of care, timeliness of care and patient experience.

"We are so very proud and excited to receive this distinctive honor," said Tammy Hartfield, RN, CNO. "But more than anything else, our sustained 4-star ranking demonstrates the dedication and cooperation to quality patient care of absolutely every member of the St. Mark's team. We celebrate their achievement. In addition to being an important award, our four-star rating confirms that we continue to fulfill our mission to deliver high-quality and compassionate patient care to the members of our community."

According to the Hospital Compare Star Ratings Fact Sheet, CMS created the HCAHPS Star Ratings to enable consumers to more quickly and easily judge the patient experience. Publicly launched by CMS in April 2015, the ratings show how well each hospital performed, on average, when compared to other U.S. hospitals.
